The Future of Critical Minerals in Brazil – AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH: João Paulo Braga, CEO of Invest Minas

Exploring Brazil’s Lithium Frontier – AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH: Spark Energy Minerals

Spark Energy Minerals is rapidly establishing itself as a key player in Brazil’s Lithium Valley. In this exclusive interview, we explore the company’s strategic approach to exploration, its commitment to ESG principles, and how it plans to position itself within the global energy transition. From early-stage operations to stakeholder engagement, Spark shares unique insights into its vision for sustainable growth in one of the world’s most promising critical mineral regions.
NZC: What inspired Spark Energy Minerals to focus its strategic expansion on Brazil’s Lithium Valley, and how does the company view the region’s role in the future of the global lithium supply chain?
Spark Energy Minerals: Brazil’s Lithium Valley represents one of the most promising emerging lithium-producing regions in the world. Its favorable geology, improving infrastructure, and supportive federal, state, and local government policies make it an ideal location for sustainable development. Spark Energy Minerals sees the region not only as the anchor for the company’s strategically positioned exploration portfolio but also the leverage provided to Brazil’s important position within the global lithium supply chain, especially in the longer term. As demand for lithium accelerates, Brazil is poised to become a vital and strategic supplier, and we are proud of the fundamental role Spark’s exploration will have in cementing this future.
NZC: From a geological and operational perspective, what excites Spark Energy Minerals the most about its flagship Arapaima Lithium Project and recent acquisitions in Minas Gerais?
Spark Energy Minerals: The Arapaima Lithium Project and our additional properties in Minas Gerais sit atop highly prospective lithium-bearing pegmatite geology. Early exploration results indicate significant potential for high-grade lithium mineralization. Operationally, Brazil offers a skilled workforce and improving logistical infrastructure. These assets provide us with a strong foundation for long-term growth, and we’re excited by the immense scale of opportunity that our strategic and endowed land position offers across a region with increasing global relevance.
NZC: With a rapidly expanding portfolio, how does Spark Energy Minerals prioritize its exploration targets across Brazil while balancing technical risk and long-term value creation?
Spark Energy Minerals: We employ a disciplined, data-driven approach that integrates geophysical, geochemical, and geological data to rank and prioritize targets. Our goal is to advance the most technically sound and economically promising prospects first, while maintaining optionality across our broader portfolio. Strategic partnerships and local expertise further help us mitigate risk and ensure sustainable value creation.
NZC: What approach does Spark Energy Minerals take to establish strong, lasting relationships with local communities, governments, and regulatory authorities in Brazil?
Spark Energy Minerals: We at Spark see obtaining and maintaining a social license to operate from all stakeholders as a fundamental part of the exploration business we are in. We believe that long-term success is built on trust, transparency, and respect. Our approach involves early and continuous engagement with stakeholders, prioritizing local hiring and development, and aligning our goals with community and environmental needs. We routinely collaborate with municipal, state, and federal authorities as necessary to ensure full compliance with modern internationally accepted good-practice policies and procedures.
NZC: How is Spark Energy Minerals integrating ESG considerations and sustainability frameworks into its exploration and potential future development strategies?
Spark Energy Minerals: As we at Spark are focused on the very earliest, generative greenfields exploration activities, it is fundamental we are cognizant of the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles that are fundamentally part and parcel of any modern development that may arise from a successful discovery. As such, our geological teams are well-versed in their ESG responsibilities from the first interactions with the communities where they are working, even prior to taking the first samples in each new project area. We conduct thorough environmental impact and risk assessments and incorporate appropriate community development investment provision in the event of exploration success. We’re committed to aligning with global best practices that will go a long way to ensuring responsible and practical outcomes from our exploration activities.
NZC: As the global demand for lithium and battery metals intensifies, how is Spark Energy Minerals positioning itself among emerging and established players in the industry?
Spark Energy Minerals: We are positioning ourselves as an agile and forward-looking exploration company with a focus on high-quality, high-potential assets in a rapidly developing jurisdiction. Our commitment to technical excellence, ESG responsibility, and strategic partnerships allows us to compete effectively while retaining the flexibility of an agile player. We aim to be recognized not just for resource potential but for integrity, impact and optionality leveraged from our long-term vision.
NZC: Spark Energy Minerals brings together a leadership team with deep industry expertise. How does this collective experience shape the company’s growth strategy and operational agility?
Spark Energy Minerals: Our leadership team has a proven track record across exploration, project development, and capital markets. This experience ensures that we make informed strategic decisions, attract top-tier talent and partners, and maintain agility in a dynamic market. The team’s collective vision and execution capabilities are central to our mission of building a leading lithium-focused exploration company.
NZC: Can you give us a glimpse into what a typical day looks like on-site during early-stage exploration at one of Spark Energy Minerals’ Brazilian properties?
Spark Energy Minerals: A typical day begins with technical and non-technical briefing covering work appropriate areas which generally include safety - health dialogue and risk identification and mitigation, activity and work - production goals and expectations (quantity and quality), and where appropriate training and development briefings. Since "on the ground" exploration activities commenced in November, we have primarily been undertaking stream sediment sampling, geological mapping, and the identification of sites where previous mainly informal mining activity has taken place. Early success has allowed our activities to expand towards more detailed sampling and geological-structural mapping over priority targets to position for diamond drill testing of these areas. Our initial exploration work has limited or nil environmental impact but has allowed for early community and related stakeholder interaction which certainly has provided goodwill for the next phases of work over more restricted target areas. Our proactive exploration strategy ensures that every step is aligned with our broader objectives.
NZC: How does Spark Energy Minerals see its role evolving in the context of the global energy transition and the shift to low-carbon technologies over the next decade?
Spark Energy Minerals: As the world accelerates toward electrification and decarbonization, Spark Energy Minerals is committed to being a vital enabler of the transition. By responsibly exploring and moving towards developing the lithium assets we discover, we would clearly be contributing and supporting the increased production of batteries that power EVs, renewable energy storage, and more. We aim to be a long-term contributor to the global clean energy value chain, providing ethically sourced materials that empower sustainable solutions.
NZC: As an Official Sponsor of the Brazil Lithium & Critical Minerals Summit 2025, what motivated Spark Energy Minerals to support this initiative, and what outcomes does the company hope to achieve through its participation?
Spark Energy Minerals: We are proud to sponsor the Summit as it aligns perfectly with our high-level mission to participate in the elevation of Brazil's role in the global critical minerals space. The event provides a platform to share our role in increasing the knowledge, fostering collaboration, and the attraction of the necessary investment into Brazil’s burgeoning lithium industry. Through our participation, we aim to strengthen partnerships, engage with stakeholders, and certainly highlight the immense potential of our strategic Arapaima project and Brazil-wide portfolio.
