French renewable energy company Voltalia has begun the construction of the Spitalla Solar Park, a 100 MW photovoltaic facility located north of Durrës, near Albania’s largest port. This development follows the completion of the Karavasta Solar Park, the largest photovoltaic project in the country, marking another significant milestone in Albania’s renewable energy sector.

Once operational in 2027, the Spitalla Solar Park is expected to generate enough electricity to meet the annual needs of approximately 150,000 residents. The project was awarded in Albania’s first solar power auction held in 2021, which secured Voltalia a 15-year contract for difference (CfD) at a rate of EUR 29.89 per MWh for 70 MW of its capacity. The remaining 30 MW will be sold through long-term agreements to private sector buyers, demonstrating a balanced approach to public and private sector engagement in energy production.

Voltalia will act as the developer, builder, operator, and owner of the Spitalla Solar Park, consolidating its role as a key player in Albania’s clean energy transition. The company’s CEO, Sébastien Clerc, emphasized the importance of the project for both Voltalia and Albania, highlighting the company’s capability to deliver turnkey photovoltaic solutions that contribute to the diversification of Albania’s energy mix and enhance economic development through competitive energy prices.

In addition to its large-scale projects, Voltalia has previously constructed three smaller solar parks in Albania, each with a capacity of 2.5 MW and operating under a feed-in tariff mechanism. The company is also expanding its footprint with agrisolar projects, blending solar power production with agricultural use to optimize land utilization.

Globally, Voltalia operates across 20 countries on three continents and manages a portfolio of 3.1 GW of energy in operation and under construction, with 17.2 GW of projects in development. Listed on the Euronext regulated market in Paris, Voltalia’s renewable energy assets span solar, wind, hydro, biomass, and energy storage, reinforcing its reputation as a leader in sustainable energy solutions.

Meanwhile, Albania’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy has continued to foster its renewable energy strategy by holding additional auctions for both solar and wind power projects, with Voltalia among the participants. The company’s latest developments in Albania underscore its commitment to supporting the country's ambition of increasing renewable energy capacity while contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable regional energy system.
