Morocco is set to invest MAD 30 billion in upgrading and expanding its national electricity grid by 2030, announced Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development. This investment will fortify the country’s energy infrastructure and excludes a significant 3-gigawatt power link project connecting the southern and central regions.

Speaking during a parliamentary session on Monday, Benali highlighted a key policy shift: private sector participation in the electricity network will be permitted when necessary. This marks the first time the government has opened the door to private investments in the grid.

The minister also revealed that over 2,000 megawatts of renewable energy projects have been approved under the current administration. These initiatives represent an investment of MAD 19 billion and have created over 300 direct jobs, with thousands of additional indirect opportunities.

To further reduce energy costs, the government is implementing reforms to improve governance within the sector. Key measures include enhancing the role of the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE) and restructuring the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) by separating its production, transmission, and distribution activities.

Benali also reported substantial progress in renewable energy development, with 5.4 gigawatts of installed capacity now operational, supplying nearly 20% of the country’s electricity demand.

Ambitious Renewable Energy Expansion

The minister reiterated Morocco’s plans to add over 9 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity between 2023 and 2027, with an estimated investment of MAD 90 billion. The government aims to quadruple annual renewable energy investments to surpass its clean energy targets.

Additionally, reforms have been introduced to streamline the investment process. These include the digitization of procedures to enhance transparency, with most renewable energy project requests now processed within 30 days.

These strategic efforts align with King Mohammed VI’s directives to accelerate Morocco’s energy transition and support its sustainable development goals, Benali emphasized.

With these advancements, Morocco is cementing its position as a regional leader in renewable energy, driving economic growth, and ensuring energy security for future generations.
