Central Puerto and YPF Luz announced a strategic collaboration to evaluate and develop a cutting-edge extra-high voltage (EHV) interconnection project aimed at meeting the energy demands of mining operations in Argentina's Puna region. The ambitious project, which could involve an investment of $250 to $400 million, promises to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of the mining sector in the country.

A Vision for Clean and Efficient Energy

The proposed development includes constructing a transmission line spanning 140 kilometres, with the potential to expand up to 350 kilometres. This infrastructure will enable the delivery of clean and efficient energy solutions to mining projects and surrounding communities in the Salar de Pastos Grandes and Salar del Hombre Muerto areas, located in the provinces of Salta and Catamarca.

The initiative could also extend to the Salar de Carachi Pampa in Catamarca, integrating these regions into the Argentine Interconnection System (SADI). Both companies emphasised that this project represents a comprehensive solution to energy supply challenges, focusing on technical and regulatory feasibility to meet the needs of the mining industry and local communities.

Strategic Importance for Argentina’s Mining Sector

This collaboration comes at a pivotal moment as global demand for critical minerals such as lithium and copper—essential for the energy transition—continues to rise. Fernando Bonnet, CEO of Central Puerto, highlighted the strategic relevance of this project:
"The development of mining in northwest Argentina is fundamental and strategic for the country’s economic growth, particularly given the international demand for critical minerals necessary for the energy transition."

Bonnet also noted the importance of creating energy solutions tailored to mining needs:
"Together with YPF Luz, we are strengthening our commitment to providing reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy solutions that enhance the competitiveness of mining companies."

Empowering a Global Leader in Lithium and Copper

Martín Mandarano, CEO of YPF Luz, underlined Argentina’s potential to become a global leader in lithium and copper production, stating:
"At YPF Luz, we are committed to developing integrated energy solutions that position Argentina as a global powerhouse in critical mineral supply."

Martin Mandarano further elaborated on the value of collaboration:

"This strategic agreement with Central Puerto underscores our ability to develop large-scale energy infrastructure and reflects our vision of working collaboratively with industry stakeholders. Together, we will drive the infrastructure needed by mining projects, delivering significant benefits to the country, provinces, and local communities."

A Step Forward for Economic and Sustainable Growth

The extra-high voltage interconnection project signifies more than just infrastructure—it represents a key enabler of sustainable development in Argentina. By improving energy access in remote mining regions, this initiative will contribute to the growth of an industry that plays a vital role in the country’s economy while meeting the global demand for cleaner, energy-transition-ready minerals.

Both Central Puerto and YPF Luz have demonstrated their commitment to innovation, sustainability, and strategic collaboration, reinforcing Argentina’s position as a competitive player in the global mining and energy sectors.
