In a significant step toward ensuring water security amid rising climate challenges, Morocco’s National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) has signed a €50 million loan agreement with the German development bank KfW to enhance the country’s water supply infrastructure. The agreement was formalized on Wednesday by ONEE Director General Tarik Hamane and KfW Morocco Director Janne Rajpar, reinforcing a decades-long partnership between the two nations in sustainable water management.
The funding will support the implementation of a climate-resilient drinking water program designed to bolster water security in key regions, including Ghafsai, El Hajeb, Ain Legdah, Bouderbala, Souk Lgour, and M’Haya. This program goes beyond meeting immediate water needs, focusing on upgrading and modernizing water supply systems to withstand the growing environmental pressures posed by climate change.
Morocco and Germany’s collaboration in the water sector dates back to the 1980s, characterized by investments in innovative and sustainable solutions. This latest agreement builds on the success of past initiatives, reflecting both nations' shared commitment to enhancing water management through advanced climate resilience measures.
At the heart of the program is a broader strategy to strengthen Morocco’s climate action framework and meet the country’s sustainability goals. By modernizing water infrastructure, the initiative aims to ensure an uninterrupted supply of clean drinking water while promoting resource efficiency.
The collaboration aligns with Morocco’s long-term vision to address critical environmental concerns, secure water access for vulnerable regions, and improve community resilience to future climate-related disruptions.
This €50 million agreement underscores the importance of international cooperation in tackling global challenges like water scarcity and climate adaptation. KfW’s support not only reinforces Germany’s role as a key development partner but also sets a precedent for how bilateral partnerships can drive impactful environmental and social progress.
As Morocco continues to implement its climate resilience strategy, the partnership with KfW highlights the country’s proactive approach to sustainable development. By prioritizing efficient and resilient water infrastructure, Morocco is setting an example in the region for how targeted investments and international collaboration can help mitigate the effects of climate change and foster long-term sustainability.
This initiative reaffirms that water security is a cornerstone of sustainable development and a vital component in Morocco’s broader effort to safeguard its natural resources and support its growing population.
